The major applications of ozone in potable water treatment are:

Iron and Manganese removal

Iron and manganese are two of the most abundant elements found on earth. The existence of iron and manganese in potable water generates several very unpleasant side effects including color and precipitates harmful to appliances and plumbing fixtures. Both iron and manganese are easily oxidized using ozone .

Color Removal

Colored water is unattractive and the most common complaint from water customers along with taste and odor. Water with color would suggest the presence of compounds with a polyaromatic structure, substituted aromatic structures or complex ions (such as humic acids or permanganate).

Sized properly, an ozone system can be very effective in the abatement of color. This is especially true when ozone is used upstream and in conjunction with a GAC (Granular Activated Carbon) filter.

Taste and Odor Control

The problems of taste and odor are primarily associated with the actual raw water, the treatment method, the distribution system or any combination of the three.

Ozone is a strong and effective oxidant of the organic and inorganic compounds typically associated with taste and odor. Ozone will oxidize these compounds either via a direct reaction or free hydroxyl radicals.

Disinfection

As we mentioned earlier, ozone is one of the most powerful oxidants available for potable water disinfection. Ozone is also a non-chemical and environmentally friendly solution that produces fewer potentially harmful disinfection byproducts than chlorine and other alternative methods.

Improved Filtration and Flocculation

Ozone as a flocculating agent results in rapid and enhanced microflocculation of raw waters. The net result can be an increase in plant filtration rates, decrease in size of filtration beds and lower chemical costs.

Cryptosporidium Deactivation

Cryptosporidium is a waterborne parasite that infects a wide range of living things including humans, domestic and wild animals. The small size of Cryptosporidium cysts makes removal by filtration very difficult and it has also proven to be resistant to disinfectants such as chlorine. On the other hand, ozone has proven to be very effective in the deactivation of Cryptosporidium with minimal doses and contact time. Most other applicable methods act only as barriers to cysts but do not actually destroy them.

Giardia and Virus Inactivation

Ozone is much more effective then other disinfectants in the inactivation of Giardia and other waterborne virus. Ozone will inactivate virus at a much faster rate than chlorine and other chemical disinfectants.

Conclusion

Ozone is becoming a popular alternative solution to traditional chemical water treatment agents while providing additional benefits. Ozone is an oxidizing agent, 1.5 times more powerful than chlorine and effective over a much wider spectrum of microorganisms.
